Increasing Your Home's Security Through Landscaping

Landscaping for SecurityMost homeowners landscape their properties to enhance the beauty and comfort level of their home but did you know you can landscape to protect your home from burglars?  The three most important factors to keep in mind are accessibility to windows and doors, visibility of the street and/or neighbors, and effective lighting.

Accessibility to Windows and Doors

Thick, bushy shrubs underneath the windows might seem like a good idea but they can provide a thief with a place to hide before entering through the window.  Make sure that the shrubs are well maintained so they are not large enough to provide cover and provide clear visibility to windows and doors from the street.  Dwarf conifers are a good option to look into.  Be sure you pick the type that is appropriate to your region’s climate and your yard’s sunlight.

Roses, holly and other prickly vegetation are optimal due to their harsh texture, making it unlikely that someone will hide there.  Placing these thick, thorny hedges in areas that provide easy access to the home or tend to be dark at night can add a layer of security to the home.  Consider placing gravel around the plants underneath the windows so you will be able to hear someone coming.  Large trees should also be trimmed so there are no branches below 8 feet.  This will keep a potential burglar from climbing the tree to enter second story windows.

Visibility to Street and Neighbors

As discussed above, maintaining shrubs and trees so there is clear visibility of the street and neighbors can help deter someone from choosing you home.  It is also important because it could potentially allow for a person in close proximity to witness someone trying to get into your home.  Make sure your yard is clear of equipment, toys and other items that might attract someone to your property.  All personal items, including ladders, step stools and other tools should be stored in a locked shed or garage.

Lighting

Proper outdoor lighting can be vital because it can deter a robber by illuminating the property so neighbors and passerby’s on the street can see your home.  Consult a professional on exactly what type of lighting is appropriate to your home and won’t create shadows that could aid in getting into your home.   Some things to consider are illuminating areas that tend to be darker, appropriate lighting for your decks, patios and pools, and using motion detectors so the lights are not on constantly.

While it is expensive to redo your home’s entire landscaping, taking bits and pieces of this information and seeing how it best translates to your home can keep you family safe from intruders.
