Renewable Energy: Tesla Motors and Toyota Motor Corp. Partner

Tesla Motors, the car company that brought you the electric Roadster sports car, has announced their partnership with Toyota Motor Corp.  Currently, Tesla is in development with the Model S, the electric sedan slated to be released in 2012.   Toyota has previously announced that they plan to release an “urban commuter” all electric car by 2012.  In addition to their separate electric endeavors, Toyota and Tesla are currently working on a new model together.

Although the concept behind their current developments is the same, the technology is not.  Toyota currently uses larger types of battery cells while Tesla uses thousands of small lithium ion battery cells, like the ones that power laptops.  It will be interesting to see which technology will prevail in their partnership model.

Tesla’s much anticipated Models S sedan is equipped with seating for 7, lots of cargo space and a variety of batteries that last between 160-300 miles on a single charge.  Like the Roadster, the electric Model S does not comprise on acceleration as it can go from 0-60 in 5.5 seconds and reach speeds up to 120 mph.

Last month, Tesla raised $260 million dollars in their IPO.  An IPO (initial public offering) is when a company publicly issues shares of stocks for the first time.
